The Solitude of Pietro Crespi
Pietro Crespi was a very social person throughout his life in the story. He came to Macondo to bring the pianola. When he arrived at the Buendia household he fell in love with Rebecca. Both Rebecca and Amaranta were in love with him. He would dance around the house to the sounds of the pianola and everyone thought that he was like a fairy. "You don't have to worry so much," Jose Arcadio Buendia told her. "The man's a fairy." Pietro Crespi planned to marry Rebecca. This caused him to believe that he would be happy and would never have to experience solitude, but Rebecca left him for Jose Arcadio. During this short time Pietro Crespi felt a slight solitude, but then he moved on to trying to be with Amaranta. He would still come to the house to visit the family and eventually asked Amaranta to marry him. Amaranta said yes but that he would have to wait because "it was no time to be thinking about marriage." Pietro was not in solitude during this time because he would go over to the Buendia house to see Amaranta and they became very fond of each other. Pietro thought that he was working his way to be able to marry Amaranta, but Amaranta ends up telling him that she would never marry him. This pushed Pietro over the edge and he ends up committing suicide because he could not deal with being in solitude. So Pietro Crespi was not in solitude at all because at the point in the story where he would have been entering into solitude, he killed himself because he could not deal with the solitude.
The Solitude of Col. Gerinaldo Marquez
Col. Gerinaldo Marquez starts out not being in solitude, but slowly moves into solitude for several different reasons. At first he is very into the war with Col. Aureliano Buendia. He enjoys making plans and being surrounded by his troops. He makes friends with Aureliano. As the story continues, Col. Gerinaldo Marquez begins to fall for Amaranta. He is willing to give up everything for her. It gets to the point that he is bored with war around the same time that Amaranta realizes that Remedios the Beauty has grown up to be the most beautiful woman ever. "It was about that time that Colonel Gerineldo Marquez began to feel the boredom of war." Since he was becoming bored with the war, he began to feel the solitude from that. He felt as though it didn't mean anything like what it used to mean. "He summoned on his reserves of persuasion, his broad and repressed tenderness, ready to give up for Amaranta a glory that had cost him the sacrifice of his best years." He was then ready to put all of his efforts on winning over Amaranta. She really wanted nothing to do with the courting. "Let's forget about each other forever," she told him. "We're too old for this sort of thing now." After this happened Colonel Gerineldo Marquez felt completely in solitude. "At the end, Colonel Gerineldo Marquez looked at the desolate streets, the crystal water on the almond trees, and he found himself lost in solitude."
The Solitude of Mauricio Babilonia
Mauricio Babilonia was not really in solitude at all until the end of his life. He worked for the banana company and was very outgoing. He began to fall in love with Meme and courts her. He is not afraid to show anyone how he feels about Meme. They are found kissing in the movie theater and Fernanda takes Meme home and confines her to the house, but Mauricio finds a way in and makes love to her every night. They were in love and Aureliano Sugunda was allowing them to be by believing Meme. Soon Fernanda found out about Mauricio sneaking into Meme's baths and she had him shot by saying he was a chicken thief. The bullet lodged in his spine caused him to be bedridden the rest of his life and "he died of old age in solitude, without a moan, without a protest, without a single moment of betrayal, tormented by memories and by the yellow butterflies, who did not give him a moment's peace, and ostracized as a chicken thief."
